Hacker missed what's in Grace Tseng's picture
(1) The elevation field of this GPS track is extremely stable. But Garmin inreach mini on her shoulder strap does not have a barometer and therefore severe fluctuation in elevation is expected.
(2) And according to the time span, there should be theoretically 709 points. But the signal miss rate of this GPS track is so high that only 231 points are left. This is very unusual since there is no obstacle toward the sky.
(3) The points left even showed some regularity in time spacing. This is unusual and is a signature of hacking.
(4) There is "Batt" field in every point of this GPS track. But infact Garmin inReach mini 2 would occasionally skip it. This constant existence of "Batt" field lasting whole 23:36 timespan is therefore a signature of hacking.
(5) The time spacing of this GPS track is fixed multiple of two minutes during whole 23:36 time span. But infact Garmin inReach mini 2 would occasionally skip extra time in multiple of 15 seconds. This constant time spacing is therefore a signature of hacking.
But such evidence is very difficult to explain to general public.
What general public do understand is that one man is moving or standing still. You can tell from this picture taken before this record-breaking attempt. The picture was taken at 18:19. But the likely hacked GPS track reported that she is moving between 18:18:45 and 18:20:45. She climbed up 8 meters and moved 65 meters during this time span.
Some might argue that she could just take this picture and start running immediately. But you know this is extremely unusual. Normally if this picture is taken with our own phone, we will take off the gloves and check the image. Put things back and check if everything is secured in place.
And they need some more time to get back to the shape for moving -- for example, covering their faces with masks and re-orientating the headlamp before holding back the stick. And then we wave goodbye to the one help taking this picture before we start record breaking ascent. Why rush? the clock is not ticking at start point.
Some might say this is a fluctuation of GPS positioning, but it is not. According to this GPS track, she moved toward almost the same direction in the following four minutes. This time she climbed up 38 meters and moved 124 meters. This corresponds to moving up 19 meters and 62 meters horizontally in two minutes. There is no obvious fluctuation in this GPS track. The movement is steady and efficient.
A much more compelling story is that the GPS track is hacked. The hacker simply followed the instructions he got and create an evenly highspeed ascent. This ascent is record breaking. But he missed what is revealed by this picture. Therefore, we got a paradox. Was she moving fast? Or standing still and taking that picture?
I think this is something general public can understand without getting into all the technics and digits.
The truth is not in hacked GPS track. It is in your eyes, in your heart.
